Compare domain prices: register, renew and transfer

The first-year price is only the start. We compare what a domain really costs over 3 years, renewals included, so you keep your name for less.

Availability search is coming soon. For now we'll use your domain to find hosting and email quotes, and you can compare registrar prices by extension below.

How domain pricing works

  1. First year vs renewal

Registrars often discount the first year. From year two you pay their renewal price, which is often much higher. That's why we sort by the 3-year cost: the first year, the renewals and any fees you can't avoid.

  2. Registry and ICANN fees

Every registrar pays the registry a wholesale fee per domain-year, and for generic domains like .com, ICANN adds $0.20 per year. [2] When wholesale prices rise, renewals usually follow.

  3. Privacy

Some registrars include privacy for your contact details free; others charge every year. Add it to the total before you compare.

  4. Transfers can be the cheapest renewal

For generic domains like .com, a completed transfer adds a year to your registration. [5] So moving to a registrar with a lower transfer price can cost less than renewing where you are.

  5. Late renewal costs more

Letting a domain expire can mean paying a restore fee on top of the renewal to get it back. For generic domains, registrars must remind you about a month and a week before expiry. [6]

Frequently asked questions

Why do domains cost more to renew?

Many registrars discount the first year and charge their standard price from year two. Compare on the 3-year cost so the first-year discount can't flatter a deal.

What's the cheapest way to keep my domain?

Compare the renewal price at your registrar with the transfer price elsewhere. For generic domains like .com, a transfer adds a year, so it can work out cheaper. [5]

Do you need my registrar login?

Never. Transfers use the domain's auth (EPP) code, or for .uk an IPS tag change. For DNS changes, we give you a step-by-step guide.

Can you check if a domain is available?

Not yet. Availability search is coming soon. For now, pick an extension to compare registrar prices, or get quotes for hosting and email for your domain.
