Our methodology
A comparison is only as good as its prices. Here's where ours come from and how we keep them honest.
Where our prices come from
We collect prices from each host's own public pricing pages, for every contract length a plan offers. For each price we record the page it came from, the intro price, the renewal price, any setup fee, the currency and whether tax is included.
A member of our team checks every new price and every change before it appears on Serverlinx. Big price changes are flagged for a closer check, so a typing mistake can't slip through. We keep a history of changes.
We don't take prices from hosts' sales teams, from other comparison sites or from memory. If we can't find a price on a host's own site, we don't show one.
How fresh the prices are
- Every price shows the date we last checked it.
- If we haven't checked a plan for 14 days, it carries a warning.
- If we haven't checked a plan for 30 days, we hide it from your quotes until we check it again.
What “true 3-year cost” means
Hosting is often sold on a low first-term price that goes up when the plan renews. So we don't compare on the first month. We add up what you'd pay over 36 months: the intro price for the first term, the renewal price for the rest, and any setup fee.
If a host doesn't publish its renewal price, we say so, mark the figure with an asterisk, and rank the plan lower. The full working is on how we calculate costs and savings.
Tax and currency
You can see prices in pounds, euros or dollars. We pick one based on where you are, and you can change it at any time.
- Pounds (£): include UK VAT at 20%.
- Euros (€): shown before VAT for now, because the rate depends on your country.
- Dollars ($): shown before any sales tax, which depends on where you live.
Every price is labelled with its tax basis. We store each price in the host's own currency and convert it using the European Central Bank's daily reference rates. Your bank or card may use a slightly different rate.
How we choose and order your quotes
We only show plans that fit what you told us, then rank them mostly on the true 3-year cost. The factors and how much each counts are published on how we rank quotes. Commission never changes the order.
What we don't cover
- Every host in the world. We list hosts we have checked prices for. If a host is missing, it's because we don't have checked prices for it yet, not because it doesn't pay us.
- Discount codes and one-off deals that aren't on a host's public pricing page.
- Optional extras you add at checkout, such as paid backups or extra IP addresses, unless the plan includes them.
- Local taxes not shown above, such as your country's VAT on euro prices or US sales tax.
- Speed and uptime. We don't measure hosts' performance ourselves yet. Review sites that publish their own measurements count most in the critics' score on each host page.
- Reviews. Prices don't depend on reviews. What published review sites say about a host appears separately on its host page, as our critics' score and verdict, and never changes a price or the order of your quotes. How we review hosts.
