Hosting Renewal Price Index

How much do hosting prices jump at renewal?

Every quarter we measure the gap between the deal price hosts advertise and the price you pay once it ends, for each type of hosting, from the prices we track.

First edition coming

We publish the index once a quarter has ended and at least 30 real hosting plans had a checked price on its last day. We're still adding hosts, so the first edition isn't out yet. We won't fill the gap with estimates or demo figures.

In the meantime, see how prices are moving on our hosting price index, or work out your own 3-year cost.

How we work out the index

Only our own price data. Every figure comes from hosting plans in the Serverlinx comparison, using the price each plan had at the last moment of the quarter. Prices come from hosts' published pricing pages and partner price feeds, and a person approves every change before we use it.

Sample sizes. Every figure shows how many plans it rests on. We don't show a figure for fewer than 5 plans, and we don't publish an edition with fewer than 30 plans in total.

What we measure. Intro price = the monthly price during the deal. Renewal price = the monthly price once it ends. Renewal jump = how much higher the renewal price is than the intro price, per plan; we report the middle (median) plan. "Renew at 2×+" counts plans whose renewal price is at least double the intro price. The 3-year cost adds setup fees and the renewal months, as our quotes do. Where a plan can be bought several ways, we use the cheapest over 3 years that needs no more than 36 months upfront.

Each currency on its own. Prices stay in the currency the host charges, in separate tables. We never convert between currencies: this is a statistical report, and converting at one day's exchange rate would move the figures with the currency markets rather than with hosts' prices.

What's left out. Demo data (never counted), cloud providers we leave out of our comparison, per-hour and per-person pricing, regional and Windows price lists, domains, email and SSL, and prices we haven't been able to check recently.

Fixed once published. Each edition is stored when it's published and never changes, so a figure you cite stays true. Some hosts pay us commission when you buy through us; that never changes these figures. How we make money.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Hosting Renewal Price Index?

A quarterly report on how much web hosting prices rise when the intro deal ends. For each type of hosting it gives the typical intro price, the typical renewal price, the typical jump between them, and how many plans renew at double the intro price or more.

Why do hosting prices go up at renewal?

Many hosts sell the first term at a discount to win new customers, then charge their full price from the first renewal. Why renewal prices go up

Where does the data come from?

From the prices of the hosting plans we compare, read from hosts' published pricing pages and partner price feeds. A person checks every price change before we use it. Demo data is never counted.

Can I use these figures in an article?

Yes. Please credit the Serverlinx Hosting Renewal Price Index and link to the edition you're quoting. Each edition has a CSV download and embeddable charts, and never changes once published.

How do I avoid the renewal jump?

Compare plans on the total over 3 years, not the first month, and check your renewal date before it arrives. When it comes round, switching often costs less, and we can move everything for you. Work out your 3-year cost
